11 Richard was a complex, autocratic character and the dispute multifaceted, by no means simply a quarrel between Richard and Herbert. Richard finally settled in Shanghai, working as an editor of Christian literature and garnering substantial influence, while remaining a BMS missionary. His views, much decried by some of his colleagues, gained prominence and helped to shape the direction of China’s reform following the revolution in 1911 and the overthrow of China’s last dynasty.
